Chinatown | Traces

My work has often reflected my interest in defining a sense of place in time and memory. In Chinatown today, the tourist version exists but there is much more than that. East of the Bowery, the signs are rarely in English. At 7:30 in the morning, there are signs of work everywhere. The reality of Chinatown is often at odds with the idea.

But things are changing. Upscale housing in New York is spreading into new neighborhoods, yet Chinatown is still growing, expanding. Change is constant. This Chinatown is newer, more modern, yet still rooted in the culture, often catering to newly arrived immigrants from a quickly modernizing China. The juxtaposition of old and new, China and America, Chinatown and New York City creates visual elements that define a place at a crossroads.
